Dior was born in 1905 near Normandy in Granville, France. After graduating in 1928 from the École des Sciences Politiques, he followed his own passions and opened a Parisian art gallery, exhibiting prominent artists of the time such Picasso and Braque. Dior then realised his love for fashion, immersing himself in art and design work such as fashion illustration. Christian Dior founded the Dior brand 1946, reviving Haute Couture in post-war Paris. He created dresses, dubbed "The New Look" with small, corseted waists and full skirts falling below mid-calf length, emphasizing the hourglass shape. Dior soon became the designer label of Hollywood actresses such as Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, and Elizabeth Taylor.
Since Christian Dior himself six creative directors have followed, each bearing a unique identity at the prestigious fashion house: Yves Saint Laurent (1958–1960), Marc Bohan (1961–1989), Gianfranco Ferré (1989–1996), John Galliano (1997–2011), Raf Simons (2012–2015), and Maria Grazia Chiuri (2016–present). As the first female creative director at the brand Maria’s collections embrace individualism and unique expression, targeting a millennial audience.
